DOS - New Embassy Complex Design-Build
Client: U.S. Department of State (DOS)
Location: Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Business Segment: Mission Solutions
Industry: Government

Fluor performed design/build of the U.S. Embassy in the United Arab Emirates in 2004. We self-performed major components of the construction work to help ensure quality and safety, control costs and meet an aggressive schedule. To support the local economy and community, we teamed with a UAE firm to train and manage 600 craft workers.
The embassy included the Chancery as a five-story concrete structure that was unique in shape and function. The Chancery also used raised access flooring, the only new Chancery within the Department of State to use this feature throughout the building. We used a sophisticated aluminum panel system with accented mirror glazing as the building's intricate facade finish.
The embassy also incorporated energy-efficient and sustainable design characteristics along with the most current physical and technical security systems.
The project achieved more than 1 million safe work hours without a lost-time incident.
The Design-Build Institute of America awarded the project the 2004 National Design Building Award for “Best Project, Public Sector Building over $15 million.”
