Client: General Mills South Africa (Pty) Ltd.
Location: Johannesburg, South Africa
Business Segment: Urban Solutions
Industry: Manufacturing

Executive Summary
Fluor completed construction of international food manufacturer Pillsbury's new Johannesburg factory on schedule. The estimated R25 million project, which complied with the stringent standards demanded by Pillsbury in the construction of plants around the world, was completed within a year.
Client's Challenge
When South Africa became open to outside investment in the early 1990s, Pillsbury formed a joint venture with a South African company to build the prepared dough and cake mix manufacturing facility.
Baking and dessert mixes are produced at the facility, including mixes for desserts of South Africa, such as scones.
The company's famous bake-off competitions, co-sponsored by the South African Chef's Association, are held each year.
Fluor's Solution
Our scope of work included design, supply, installation and commissioning of the prepared dough and cake mix facility. The project also included construction of a freezing facility for the dough, as well as design and construction management of an operations building with ancillary and personnel facilities.
Conclusion
Fluor's entry into South Africa included a training center in Secunda, Mpumalanga, developed in partnership with government programs for job creation and economic growth. Accreditation has been awarded to many artisans who are now in demand for development projects within the country.
