Bayer Cell Culture Technology Center

Executive Summary
Fluor provided a single point of responsibility for engineering, procurement, construction management, commissioning, qualification and validation for Bayer's first-of-a-kind cell culture technology center in Berkeley, California.
The state-of-the-art Single Use Technology (SUT) biopharmaceutical development and manufacturing facility will produce oncology, cardiology and other therapeutics.
Client's Challenge
Bayer selected GE Healthcare to provide its FlexFactory™ SUT platform, which was incorporated into the project through a collaborative subcontract to Fluor. GE Healthcare supplied all major unit operations, systems and ancillary equipment and components.
The facility was constructed at Bayer's Berkeley site using land from a demolished office building.

Fluor's Solution
Fluor's innovative plant layout and modularized construction solution allowed Bayer's strategically important facility to be designed and built with capital efficiency and a focus on optimizing the project's schedule.
We had previously provided the conceptual study and front-end engineering design for the project. The scope also included process integration for the entire facility and all associated utilities. Our San Francisco office led the project with support from the company's offices in Greenville, South Carolina, and Gliwice, Poland.
A groundbreaking event for the cell culture technology center was held on May 9, 2019.

Conclusion
In December 2019, a construction milestone was reached with the placement of the facility's final steel beam. Construction was completed in 2021.
Our innovative plant layout and modularized construction solution allowed the facility to be designed and built with capital efficiency and schedule optimization. It led to a faster completion timeline, which in turn would facilitate increased speed to market for new life-saving treatments.
